Amalgamation

Amalgamation is a reflection of my overconsumption of media and how it shapes my identity. There is an irony in finding comfort and entertainment in media (anime in particular) that also perpetuates misogyny.

American media has also perpetuated this kind of misogyny in its own way, given the long history of fetishization and orientalism in many films, which contribute to harmful stereotypes of Asian women in particular.

I take all of these themes into consideration when defining myself; an amalgam of media, history, and my own lived experiences, embedded with the will to reject and transcend those stereotypes. I explore these themes by utilizing 3D models juxtaposed with a 2D self, as well as multiple images from popular anime as well as American films.

This animation was made for the 2021 UCLA DMA Senior Show.
